ANNAPOLIS â At least two of the 200 Maryland State Police troopers that Gov. Larry Hogan sent to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday â to help restore peace amid a violent and destructive insurrection by Trump supporters â are normally assigned to a barrack in Cecil County, police officials confirmed. Hogan mobilized 200 MSP troopers who are specially trained members of the agencyâs statewide mobile field force team, formerly known as the âriot team,â and the governor also deployed 500 members of the Maryland National Guard â the first national guard unit to arrive in Washington, D.C. to help members of local law enforcement agencies who were outnumbered by aggressive rioters.
NORTH EAST â Maryland State Police Tfc. Stephen Turner and Cpl. Scott Tassone have been recognized as North East Barrackâs 2019 Trooper of the Year and 2019 NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) of the Year respectively. The honors were announced later â and less ceremoniously â than they had been in years past due to precautions to safeguard against the spreading of the coronavirus, such as the avoidance of large gatherings, noted Lt. Jeffrey Kirschner, commander of the North East Barrack. Kirschner presented Tassone and Turner certificates of recognition, along with distinctive Barrack NCO of the Year and Trooper of the Year uniform ribbons respectively during a low-key ceremony at the North East Barrack earlier this month. Tassone and Turner also received unique replica license plates â not for official use â to show the barrackâs appreciation for the work that they both did during 2019.
